Save Money

Businesses can save money on waste disposal costs through our coffee recycling service.

Increase Sustainability Credentials

By recycling spend coffee with us, businesses achieve greater sustainablility.

Reduces Emissions

80% less CO2 emissions than sending grounds to landfill and 70% less than sending to Anaerobic Digestion.

Ease Of Disposal

Spent grounds are easily segregated from other waste streams, making disposal and renewal by bio-bean a simple solution.

Smart Biomass products are creating new opportunities for businesses who want to make better use of their food waste disposal in Italy.

Every day, thousands of tonnes of waste coffee are disposed of and sent to landfill, anaerobic digestion plants and city incineration plants. At the same time, the planet is slowly burning virgin timber to use for comfort heating in homes, in forms such as firewood and wood pellets whilst other biomass combustion products reduce the space required for the growth of food products.

Smart biomass products are currently, successfully producing coffee pellets for trial use for domestic heating and have made progress into increasing production, ready to produce on an industrial scale.

Once processed, every 1 tonne of coffee pellets has a retail sales value of €320.00.

We plan to implement a new bespoke built factory capable of producing 1 tonne per hour.

We will recycle spent coffee grounds from businesses at every scale: from coffee shops, cafes and restaurants to office blocks, motorway services and coffee producing factories. Segregated spent grounds are collected and delivered to our factory near Macerata, where our innovative processes, condition and dry the grounds, renewing them for reuse in valuable products to benefit both people and the planet.

  1. Italy is the largest wood pellet consumer for domestic use in the world using 3.1 million tonnes. (fig 2016)
  2. Converting coffee waste in pellets saves 70% Co2 against Anaerobic Digestion.
  3. Converting coffee waste in pellets saves 80% Co2 against sending to Landfill.
  4. Stops needless food waste.
  5. Reduces business waste taxation and disposal/collection fees.
  6. Coffee pellets contain up to 25% more energy than other fuel pellets.
  7. Captures up to 99% more energy than incineration and Landfill.
  8. More effective energy captured than anaerobic digestion.
  9. Slows de-forestation as an alternative to wood fuel.
  10. Reduces transportation and import of wood fuel.
  11. Low raw material cost as the waste is donated free of charge.
  12. Uses up to 45% less energy to pelletise or make briquettes compared to wood feed stocks.
  13. Short growing period of raw materials. (minimum of 4-7 years for trees compared to 6 months for coffee)
  14. Contributes to resolving the energy crisis.
  15. Cheaper alternative for domestic solid fuel users.
  16. Proven industry with proven technology in a proven market.
  17. Creates a sustainable business while adding profit.

Firstly, coffee pellets save’s trees and deforestation. – Italy consumes around 400,000 tonnes per year of wood pellets that is used to heat homes and factories. This equates to around 300,000 mature pine trees – every year.

Many of the pellets are imported from Slavic, Baltic and Balkan countries increasing Co2 pollution from transportation.

Coffee Pellets have a naturally higher calorific value of up to 20% more than wood pellets meaning users who decide to use coffee pellets are likely to consume less per year to heat their homes or business and can experience annual heating costs of up to 30% less.

Utilising coffee waste is the best form of disposal as most coffee waste currently goes to landfill, anaerobic digestion and local incineration.

Why do we need Investment?

For the last 18 months we have been collecting coffee waste on a small scale and have developed the know how to be able to successfully produce and refine coffee pellets for domestic use.

We are now ready to scale up this operation to enable us to produce 1 tonne per hour. Our vision is that within 1 year, we will be running at full capacity producing 20 tonnes per day, 360 days a year. This has an annual sales value of €2.3m.

To achieve this, we hope to develop our new factory and install new machinery that can cope with such an amount of waste coffee.

We need to be able to collect, refine, dry and process 26 tonnes of wet coffee waste and husk, per day, but to do so we require transportation, industrial dryers, pelletising equipment and a suitable building to house the equipment / operation.
